  4.              GUARD  -  Garfield's Universal Automatic Reboot Device

  7.     OVERVIEW:
  8.  
  9.     GUARD is  designed specifically for Sysops  of BBS operating on  IBM or
  10.     IBM compatible systems. This 8-bit  half-slot circuit card monitors the
  11.     phone  line  and  when  sensing  "ring-thru"  resets  the computer on a
  12.     preselected  ring  count.  The  reset  performed  is  identical to that
  13.     achieved by depressing the "Reset" button on the computer. Thus, a BBS
  14.     which experiences a "hang" condition will be reset by the next incoming
  15.     call.

  17.     PHILOSOPHY:
  18.  
  19.     Although this  approach is not quite  as reliable as units  which "cold
  20.     boot" the  system by cycling  the AC power  line, the vast  majority of
  21.     "hang" conditions are corrected by GUARD; and GUARD has two significant
  22.     advantages! The first advantage is SAFETY: the unattended cycling of AC
  23.     power  lines has  certain risks.  The second  advantage is  COST: GUARD
  24.     costs less than any system which cycles the AC power line!
  25.  
  26.     OPERATION:
  27.  
  28.     Set  the ring  count on  GUARD by  installing the  jumper block  in the
  29.     appropriate location. Complete instructions  and diagrams are furnished
  30.     for proper jumper block installation. The default setting is for  THREE
  31.     RINGS!  If  your  modem is not  answering  within three rings, you most
  32.     likely have a problem. You can set GUARD for any ring count between one
  33.     and nine rings.
  34.  
  35.     Insert GUARD into  any unused slot of an IBM  or IBM compatible system.
  36.     Remove the  line connecting the  reset button from  the motherboard and
  37.     connect it  to GUARD, and  then connect a  second line (supplied)  from
  38.     GUARD to the motherboard. Plug the  incoming phone line into one of the
  39.     RJ11 jacks on the back panel of  GUARD, and then connect a second phone
  40.     line (supplied)  from the remaining  RJ11 jack on  GUARD to the  modem.
  41.     Flip the  back panel toggle  switch on GUARD  to the "ON"  position and
  42.     GUARD is operational!  This switch allows one to  easily defeat GUARD's
  43.     operation without  having to disconnect  phone lines or  take the modem
  44.     off hook.

  46.     GUARD senses the phone line and  resets the computer after the SELECTED
  47.     RING COUNT! It  then deactivates itself for a period  of 3 1/2 minutes,
  48.     thus allowing  plenty of time  for the computer  to reset and  "settle"
  49.     back into  normal operation. Complete  instructions and all  components
  50.     necessary for  proper installation and operation  of GUARD are supplied
  51.     with the unit.
